Submariner — the obvious answer, and a good one

It is the most liquid watch in the world. If you may want to sell in five years, nothing else at this price is as easy to move.
GMT-Master II — more watch for the same money
From £7,290, a GMT gives you a genuinely useful complication and a bezel that people notice. The black-bezel 116710LN is the value pick of the modern references and sits comfortably inside this budget.
A steel Pepsi 126710BLRO will push the top of it, and a 16710 with an original faded insert is a more interesting watch than either.
Solid gold Datejust or Day-Date
This is the budget where solid 18ct gold stops being theoretical. A yellow-gold Datejust 36 or an earlier Day-Date 18238 on a President bracelet is achievable, and it is a fundamentally different object from a steel watch — heavier, warmer, and containing real bullion.

Sky-Dweller — the most mechanism per pound
Our Sky-Dwellers start at £12,870. An annual calendar with a dual time zone and a Ring Command bezel, for less than a steel Daytona. On pure engineering-per-pound it is the best buy in the catalogue.
It is 42mm and it wears large. Try it before you commit.
Sea-Dweller — more watch than a Submariner
From £6,950, a Sea-Dweller gives you a thicker case, 1,220m of water resistance, a helium escape valve and generally a lower price than the equivalent Submariner. It is the connoisseur's value play in Rolex diving.
What we would not buy at this budget
A Daytona. Our Daytonas start at £13,005, and at fifteen thousand you are at the very bottom of that market, which means compromises on condition or generation. Buy a superb example of something else rather than a marginal example of a Daytona.
And nothing without a clear provenance. At this price you have the buying power to insist.
