Solid 18ct gold is achievable at this budget in the smaller sizes, which is not remotely true anywhere else in Rolex.

The 34mm Air-Kings and Oyster Perpetuals of the 114200 generation are the cheapest route to a modern 40-year-warranty-of-a-design Rolex. Our Air-Kings start at £3,070 and Oyster Perpetuals at £2,600.
A 34mm case is smaller than current fashion. It is also exactly the size Rolex sold to men for fifty years, and it wears beautifully under a cuff.
Vintage Datejust 16xxx
A 1980s or early-1990s Datejust reference 16013, 16014 or 16233 in two-tone is one of the great buys in watches. Sapphire crystal, quickset date, a proven calibre 3035 or 3135, and a design that has not dated in forty years.

What to be careful of at this price
This is the budget where the market is most dangerous. Under five thousand pounds, redialled watches, replaced bezels, aftermarket diamond settings and outright fakes are all common.
Three rules. Never buy from a seller who will not let it be independently checked. Be suspicious of a price that is far below every comparable listing. And treat "no box or papers, family piece, quick sale" as a phrase, not a story.
The honest limitations
At this budget you are generally buying an older watch, often without box and papers, quite possibly with a polished case, and likely needing a service within a few years. Budget for that service. It is part of the cost of the watch.
