The name is not marketing
Rolex introduced the Air series in the late 1930s in tribute to RAF pilots, many of whom bought Oysters privately because the issued watches were poor. The Air-King is the only one of the family — Air-Lion, Air-Tiger, Air-Giant — that survived, and it has been in the catalogue almost continuously since 1945.
That makes it one of the longest-running model names Rolex has ever used, which sits oddly with how little attention it gets.
The two modern Air-Kings
The 114200 / 114210 / 114234 generation (2007–2014) is a 34mm watch that is effectively an Oyster Perpetual with an Air-King signature. The 114234 with its white-gold fluted bezel is the dressiest.
The 116900 (2016–2022) is a completely different proposition: 40mm, a black dial with 3, 6 and 9 in large numerals, a minute-track in green and yellow lifted from the Bloodhound SSC land-speed project, and an antimagnetic soft-iron shield borrowed from the Milgauss. The 126900 (2022–) refined it with crown guards and a better bracelet.
Why the 116900 divides people
It has a green ROLEX in the coronet, yellow numerals, a dial layout unlike anything else in the catalogue and — until 2022 — no crown guards on a case that clearly wanted them. It is the least Rolex-looking Rolex.
It is also genuinely antimagnetic, genuinely legible, and the most interesting thing you can buy at its price. Enthusiasm for it has grown steadily since it was discontinued.

Air-King or Oyster Perpetual?
The 34mm Air-Kings are near-identical to Oyster Perpetuals of the same period and should be priced similarly — buy on condition, not on name.
The 40mm 116900 and 126900 have no Oyster Perpetual equivalent. If you want that dial, only the Air-King has it.
The value case, stated plainly
You are buying an Oyster case, a Rolex in-house automatic movement, a Superlative Chronometer certification and an Oyster bracelet, for less than any other route into the brand. The only thing you are giving up is the recognition that comes with a Submariner silhouette.
For a lot of buyers, giving that up is the point.
