The Complete Rolex Submariner Buying Guide

· Updated 1 November 2024 · 12 min read

Introduction: Why the Submariner?

The Rolex Submariner is arguably the most iconic watch ever made. Introduced in 1953 as the world’s first water-resistant watch to 100 metres, it has become the defining template for virtually every dive watch that followed. Over 70 years later, it remains Rolex’s most popular model — a feat almost unmatched in horology.

But with 184 Submariners currently in stock at The Crown Vault, how do you choose? This guide covers everything: reference history, current market values, what to inspect, and which version suits you best.

Reference Guide: A Brief History

The Original Submariners (1953–1980)

The earliest references — 6200, 6204, 6205, 6536 — featured pencil hands, no crown guards, and dials in various configurations. These are firmly in collector territory, with pristine examples reaching six figures.

The Classic Era (1980–2010)

References 16610 and 16800 defined the “classic” Submariner look with magnified date window, sapphire crystal, and Oyster bracelet. The 16610 ran for 20 years (1988–2010) and remains the most affordable way into a relatively modern Submariner, typically £6,500–£9,500.

The Modern Era (2010–2020): Reference 116610

The 116610LN (black) and 116610LV (green “Hulk”) introduced Cerachrom ceramic bezels — dramatically more scratch-resistant than the aluminium inserts of previous generations. These run on calibre 3135. Currently £9,500–£13,500.

The Current Generation (2020–present): Reference 126610

Launched in 2020, the 126610 introduced a slightly larger 41mm case (up from 40mm) and the new calibre 3235 with a 70-hour power reserve and improved shock resistance. The 126610LV now features a black dial with green bezel (replacing the “Hulk’s” green dial). Currently £11,000–£16,000 in the secondary market.

What to Inspect When Buying Pre-Owned

The Case

  • Check for deep polishing that has erased the original sharp lugs — a common sign of cheap servicing. Lugs should have defined edges.
  • Look for signs of case cracking near the crown guards (common on older references if dropped).
  • The reference and serial number should be engraved cleanly between the lugs.

The Dial

  • Look closely for signs of moisture damage (cloudiness, spotting) — often caused by a failed seal in older references.
  • Indices should be perfectly aligned and luminous material (Super-LumiNova) should be even in colour.
  • Text should be crisp and legible at all sizes.

The Movement

  • At The Crown Vault, every watch is tested for timekeeping accuracy by certified watchmakers before sale.
  • A rotor that sounds loose or scratchy may indicate a service is due.
  • The 3235 calibre should achieve COSC-standard accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day in normal wear.

The Bezel

  • Ceramic (Cerachrom) bezels on 116610/126610 are extremely scratch-resistant — any chips indicate potential misuse.
  • The insert should sit flush and without visible gaps.
  • The click action should be positive and precise, with 120 clicks per revolution.
